Walt Disney Company’s Hulu brand is to make its debut in Latin America on October 8 and will replace Star as a section within its streaming service Disney+. The change, which was preannounced in August 2025, is part of the company’s plan to transform Hulu into Disney+’s global general entertainment brand.

The decision is aligned with the idea of integrating streaming platform Hulu into Disney+ in the United States, which will be implemented in 2026. In preparation for the integration, Disney has decided to expand the Hulu brand globally so that it may replace Star on Disney+.

Hulu was created in the United States in 2007 as a subscription-based streaming platform, as a result of the partnership between NBCUniversal and News Corporation (Fox). The OTT has managed to consolidate its position as an important entertainment option within the US territory and currently offers numerous originals and a broad catalog of series and movies. During the course of its evolution, Hulu had several stockholders with minority holdings, as was initially the case with The Walt Disney Company. However, Disney gradually acquired the entire capital stock. In fact, it was in 2025 that Disney closed the acquisition of the stake held by Comcast (NBCUniversal), which was the only part it had not taken so far. Throughout its history, Hulu has gone beyond the borders of the United States, though it has entered very few markets only for brief periods. Never before had it reached Latin America. The replacement of Star with Hulu will be implemented in Latin America, as well as in other regions in the world. The exception is the United States, where the integration will become effective only in 2026.

According to Disney’s executives, swapping out Star with Hulu will help increase awareness outside the United States that Disney+ has a large catalog of content that appeals to adults. Another advantage is that the company’s investment in marketing and advertising for Hulu will have significant impact worldwide.
