Claro (América Móvil) and Oi have adopted a new policy regarding the subscription fee for their Satellite TV (DTH) postpaid services. Both Brazilian telecommunications companies have set hefty prices for new subscribers, which is why it is reasonable to expect that both companies will inevitably see postpaid DTH net additions drop in the coming months.
According to local specialized media, Claro’s Satellite TV postpaid DTH subscription fee has increased from USD 21.4 to USD 83.2, almost by 300% (in the middle, that service could not be acquired due to a system problem that lasted more than a week). As regards Oi, there used to be no subscription fee for new customers, whereas the current fee is USD 142.6.
As a result, anyone wishing to subscribe for a Satellite TV service will probably choose the prepaid rather than the postpaid option. América Móvil’s operator offers prepaid SD Claro TV kit including dish and decoder at USD 32.3, while the price of the decoder if you buy it separately is USD 23.5 (SD) and USD 47.3 (HD). Finally, the lowest price charged by Elsys for an Oi receiver is USD 118.6.
