The Walt Disney Company has decided to shut down all its Pay TV channels in the Brazilian territory, with the exception of sports-related channels, which operate under the umbrela brand Espn. The news was reported by some Brazilian specialized media outlets on December 2. TAVI Latam has obtained confirmation of the above-mentioned reports from Disney press team, which has also confirmed that the decision will not have any impact on the Spanish-speaking Latin American market.
The channels that will cease broadcasting in Brazil on February 28, 2025 are the following: Disney Channel, Star Channel, Cinecanal, FX, National Geographic and Baby TV. Pay TV operators have already been given notice.
The decision is in line with the strategy that is gradually being implemented by Disney not only in the region but also throughout the world. Little by little, the company is moving away from the traditional Pay TV market in order to focus on its streaming business (Disney+). In Latin America, the company closed several channels in early 2022: Disney XD, Nat Geo Kids, Nat Geo Wild, FXM and Star Life; and in Brazil it also closed Disney Jr.
