Digicel has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its El Salvador unit to General International Telecom El Salvador (Gites), a subsidiary of General International Telecom (GIT) operating in the country under the Movistar brand. In the Salvadorean market Digicel provides only mobile services.

The transaction is subject to compliance with customary closing terms and to the obtention of the pertinent regulatory approvals. The companies expect to close the process during the first quarter of 2027.

GIT is an international company that entered the Salvadorean market in October 2021, when it acquired the local unit then owned by Telefónica for USD 144 million. The company kept using the Movistar brand, which nowadays offers mobile services, as well as fiber optic home Internet.

The acquisition of Digicel is GIT’s second most important transaction of this type in El Salvador after the acquisition of Movistar. In 2024, GIT got the control of IBW’ local subsidiary, which is focused on providing connectivity and technological solutions to the business and corporate market.
