FIFA Club World Cup, which will have a new format next year, has become one of the most important attractions within the live broadcast segment. On December 4, the international football governing body announced an agreement with sports streaming platform DAZN in order to appoint the latter as the official global broadcaster of the tournament. As a result, all 63 matches will be live-streamed by DAZN and FIFA+, FIFA’s own OTT, globally for free.
The news was not expected at all. In July 2024, FIFA issued a call for bids to acquire broadcasting rights, which was divided according to regions. During the last few days, some networks around the world announced they would air the new edition of the Club World Cup, among which TelevisaUnivision may be mentioned. The tournament will be played in the United States between June and July 2025 and the drawing of lots, which will take place on December 5, will be available on DAZN and FIFA+ (the broadcast being open, some channels and OTTs have already announced they will air the draw live).
As regards the agreement between FIFA and DAZN, FIFA President Gianni Infantino noted: “It will make the best of club football available to the whole world, which means that all fans around the globe will be able to watch the best men playing for the 32 best clubs contesting the new FIFA Club World Cup.”
DAZN Chief Executive Officer Shay Segev also expressed his opinion: “This revolutionary agreement with FIFA is an important hit that paves the way for DAZN becoming the entertainment platform chosen by sports fans throughout the world.”
DAZN is originally a paid OTT streaming only sports content. It has been available throughout the world for several years, though it does not offer much relevant content in Latin America. On a global scale, one of its main attractions is boxing. After an initial important investment in the Brazilian market during its first few years, the platform reduced its bet in Latin America. Nowadays, the main content it offers in Brazil is the broadcast of some soccer state tournaments.
