In a noteworthy move that may set a precedent for Satellite TV services worldwide, US operator DirecTV has decided to stop selling its DTH service in certain US cities. In the areas impacted by the change, the company offers new customers only its streaming Pay TV option. Specialized website Cord Cutters News was the first to report the news.

According to the explanation given by the website, the new strategy has been adopted mainly in large cities with high-speed Internet access. The shift has not been detected in rural areas or small towns. The list of cities has not been disclosed and it is not available.

After the news became publicly known, DirectTV spokespeople told US media outlet Variety that the move was not a permanent one. “In select markets this limited-time trial will increase awareness and adoption of our satellite-free streaming service, which has quickly become the preferred solution for new consumer customers,” they explained.
