Netflix has announced that its new lower-cost ad-supported plan is to roll out in November. In addition to the United States, there are other eleven countries where the new tier will be initially launched, including only two Latin American territories: Mexico (November 1) and Brazil (November 3). The others are Germany, Australia, Canada, South Korea, Spain, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom. It is worth remembering that Netflix has partnered with Microsoft to implement this initiative.
The monthly price of the new plan, Basic with Ads, will be MXN 99 (currently equivalent to approximately USD 4.9) in Mexico and BRL 18.90 (currently equivalent to approximately USD 3.6) in Brazil. In both Latin American countries the price will be lower than in the United States, where Basic with Ads will cost USD 6.99. At present, the price of the Basic plan is MXN 139 (USD 7) in Mexico and BRL 25.90 (USD 4.9) in Brazil.
The lower-priced option will not allow downloading titles and will include between 4 and 5 minutes of advertising per hour. The ads, each of which will be between 15 and 30 seconds long, will be played before and during shows. The company has made it clear that some content will not be available in the new plan owing to “licensing restrictions”.
“Basic with Ads also represents an exciting opportunity for advertisers; the chance to reach a diverse audience, including younger viewers who increasingly don’t watch linear TV, in a premium environment with a seamless, high-resolution ads experience,” said Greg Peters, Netflix Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer, in a press release. “We have partnerships with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to verify the viewability and traffic validity of our ads starting in Q1 2023,” he added.
According to the press release, the company’s expectation is: “As we learn from and improve the experience, we expect to launch in more countries over time.”
