At the end of last week audiovisual giant Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) announced it had been granted a license to show English soccer matches live in Mexico and Central America. The company has acquired rights to air half of Premier League (England’s first division soccer league) matches, 39 FA Cup (the second most important English soccer tournament including both first division and promotion teams) games in each season, as well as the annual encounter to contest the Community Shield (played by the winner of the Premier League and the winner of the FA Cup). The matches will be broadcast under the brand of TNT Sports. All of them will be available on streaming service Max and some games will also be on Pay TV channel TNT.
According to information provided by WBD, the rights deal will be in force as from 2024-25 season, which is about to start, until 2027-28 season. The first WBD broadcast of English soccer will be the match between Manchester United and Manchester City for the Community Shield on August 10.
In Mexico and Central America, all the matches of the latest two Premier League seasons were broadcast by Paramount’s OTT, Paramount+. Although there was one year left before the expiration of the agreement, the company decided to cease Premier League games broadcasts, without giving any explanation. No official announcement has been made, but the fact that the term of the WBD agreement is four seasons means that the previous deal with Paramount was terminated and that the agreement entered into by WBD is neither an assignment of rights nor a sublicense. No information has been disclosed about the rights to broadcast the other half of Premier League matches and the rest of FA Cup games.
