Warner Bros. Discovery’s premium channel, TNT Sports Premium, has reached a deal with the Argentine Soccer Association (AFA) to extend the rights to broadcast Liga Profesional (Argentine soccer’s first division) matches for a period of four years beyond the expiration of the current agreement in 2027. Under the new deal, the license will remain in force until 2031. The news was reported by sports website Doble Amarilla.
Argentine soccer TV broadcasting rights are equally divided between TNT Sports Premium and Espn Premium (The Walt Disney Company), each of which airs one half of the total number of games on each matchday. The only option is to sign up to both channels jointly in a Pay TV premium package. The agreement between Disney’s channel and AFA will be in force until 2030. However, as a result of the new deal with TNT Sports Premium, AFA will offer Espn the possibility of extending its rights for a further year.
The new deal between TNT Sports and AFA comes in the context of a court action involving both parties. In early 2025, WBD began to offer its premium channel separately from Espn Premium and to make it available to Pay TV non-subscribers, which is not allowed by the terms of the agreement. That is the reason why AFA brought a legal action and got an injunction to preclude WBD from commercializing the channel separately.
TNT Sports Premium and Espn Premium have held Argentine local soccer league broadcasting rights since 2017 (then TNT Sports and Fox Sports Premium, respectively). As the only exceptions, Espn airs two games on each matchday on its basic Pay TV channels. Next weekend, for example, the matches will be Talleres-Gimnasia and Atlético Tucumán-Instituto.
