As confirmed to TAVI Latam by The Walt Disney Company, on November 12 Disney+ extra member add-on option was implemented in all those Latin American countries and territories where the streaming platform is available. In this way, Disney steps up its crackdown on account sharing in Latin America, a region where Netflix started a similar battle in 2022.
In late September 2024, Disney issued a press release to announce it had implemented the new extra member option in several countries around the world, including the United States, as well as almost all countries in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The initial list included only two Latin American countries: Guatemala and Costa Rica. After the first launch, Disney+ began to send email communications only to some Latin American users (living neither in Guatemala nor in Costa Rica) to inform them that starting on November 12 the company would “monitor accounts actively” and “take measures to prevent multi-household account sharing”. After the scheduled date arrived, Disney confirmed to TAVI Latam that the measure had been actually implemented throughout the region.
The extra member add-on option makes it possible for a user living in a different household to be added on to an account by paying an additional fee. According to the platform, “You may add relatives or friends not living in your household to your Disney+ account.” The extra member can view the content on only one device at a time.
